I grew up in Barcelona in a family with its own business in the service provision industry. This taught me to appreciate the special value that family enterprise organizations contribute to society. It also taught me that to generate value across generations, enterprising families need to actively and purposefully define the strategies, develop the talent, and the governance that will position them for the future. My purpose is to help families accomplish this process, using their values and purpose as stewards of the family enterprise.

I have developed an expertise in governance and strategic aspects of family enterprises, specialising in large Latin American and European family groups. My work focuses on the long-term sustainability of the family enterprise, working very closely with owners and their governance forums and/or representatives (owner ′s councils, holding boards, trustees and assemblies). This includes advising on the role of purpose and values in family enterprises and their social impact and philanthropic projects; working towards a sustainable legacy; ownership strategies and competencies; family wealth; governance (design, implementation and assessment with wide experience in multi-level governance); building effective governance teams; the development of next generation talent; and the impact of family relationships on the continuity of family organisations.

I have authored articles in journals such as the Family Business Review, European Journal of Family Business, and FFI Practitioner, and have published several chapters in books on the topics of governance in family business, family enterprise philanthropy, family enterprise generational perspectives, family business citizenship, family conglomerates (forthcoming Spring 2022), governance teams (forthcoming Spring 2022) and women owners in family enterprises (The Power of Inclusion, forthcoming February 2022).

My research has been recognised with The Family Enterprise USA Doctoral Award (2010), the FOBI Award (2015), and the IFERA Best Conceptual Paper Award (2020).

My training and experience have always integrated business and economics with psychology and family dynamics.

I am trained in economics (BA in Economics.

C.D.E.S Abat Oliva and Barcelona University, Barcelona, Spain) complemented with a Corporate Finance executive programme from Harvard Business School.

I am also trained in organisational psychology (BA in Psychology, Ramon Llull University. Barcelona, Spain), with a postgraduate degree in Bowen Family Systems Theory from the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family in Georgetown.

I am a certified coach and mediator, which has given me frameworks and skills to accompany entrepreneurial families and their leaders, working with both groups and individuals, in processes of change and transformation, often in the context of generational transitions.

I earned my PhD at ESADE Business School (Barcelona, Spain) with a specialisation in philanthropy in family businesses from a governance perspective.

Earlier in my career I worked as a financial and tax advisor to family businesses at H.W. Fisher in London and in the same capacity in my family business. Since the 2000s, I have been an advisor, researcher and educator in the area of family enterprises. Committed to these three areas within this field, complementing my advising work, I lecture on family business governance, responsible ownership, leadership and the current state of philanthropy.

I collaborate with the IE Business School (Madrid) and ESADE Business School (Barcelona) on their executive programs, and, as of September 2020, with the Tecnológico de Monterrey (México) as an International Visiting Professor. I am also actively involved with several academic and professional organizations dedicated to Family Enterprises, such as FERC and IFERA where I aim to contribute to building bridges between academics and practitioners, as well as with the Family Firm Institute (US), where I am a Fellow and faculty member of the FFI GEN Certificates in Family Business and Family Wealth Advising.

My family is very important to me. My twin children have just started university and so starting life as young adults, and this brings home to me the responsibility I feel to make some contribution, however small, both professionally and as a volunteer, towards making a more sustainable world and a fairer society.

I love art in all its forms, especially fine art but also, literature, music and the theatre.

Although we live in a big city, Barcelona, we try to spend a lot of time in the countryside and mountains, places to recharge and share quality time together. From mountaineering I have learned many skills that I am able to apply to my work - the importance of trust in the team, leadership in critical situations and the need for good and rigorous planning.
