LGA In Real Life – Our Global Team Teaching and Presenting All Over the World

2023 was the year the world left the COVID-19 pandemic behind: international travel gathered steam, business conferences resumed, and family gatherings returned to being the norm rather than the exception. “In real life” (IRL) experiences returned to being the dominant form of human interaction.

LGA was no exception, and our global team was excited to be able to gather more frequently in person to develop and share fresh insights and explore new ways to support enterprising families. Throughout the year, our team has also grown significantly, and our advisors participated in conferences and gatherings with clients and partners all over the world.

In this newsletter, we present some of the recent highlights of LGA IRL – and preview some of the exciting initiatives that kept us busy throughout the year — a core part of our mission to provide actionable insights and trusted advice to sustain the continuity of family legacies across generations.

Meet our newest advisors

Team LGA expanded globally and added fi ve new advisors, each of whom brings uniqueexpertise and a wonderful attitude to their work.

Welcome again to Basma, Bob, Tim Kelly, Tim Yeung and Dimitris!

Teaching Highlights

In addition to our advisory work, many members of our team are also educators at some of the world’s leading universities, since education is a core pillar of how we think about family enterprise continuity — both on campus and working directly with families to develop bespoke educational experiences. Additionally, this past year, members of our team helped to launch three new groundbreaking educational programs around the world which we’re excited to share.

In September, a new YPO executive education program was held at the Harvard Kennedy School. LGA Advisor Chris Robichaud was the faculty lead for the program, delivering sessions and simulations throughout the week-long event. LGA Managing Partner Devin DeCiantis also led a lunch keynote on managing risk and nurturing resilience in family enterprises. 80 participants from 40 countries participated, and the program is already oversubscribed for next year.

In October, we launched our first LatAm Family Governance program, in partnership with ESE Business School. 20 families, including 51 participants from 6 countries (Chile, Colombia, Bolivia, Mexico, Guatemala, Panamá) attended the sold-out event in New York City, and plans are already underway for another expanded session next year.

Later that same month, the Kellogg School of Management launched a new educational program in partnership with the Dubai Chamber of Commerce. The first in-person sessions were taught in Dubai on October 30-31 by Matt Allen and Nicolas Hollanders. These sessions focused on the fundamentals of Family Governance, and will be followed by both virtual and in-person courses in Evanston in 2024. The program also includes coaching for attending family members, with Wendy Ulaszek supporting the students as part of the Kellogg coaching team.

It’s tough to fit a whole year of growth and impact into a brief newsletter, but we wanted to provide you with at least a taste of what we were up to in 2023! As the new year begins, we look forward with excitement to meeting with families and colleagues around the world, and to continue delivering on our mission to be a trusted advisory and educational partner to owners of the world’s leading family enterprises.

From our team to yours, we wish you continued success in 2024 and beyond!

Why It Took Me Three Years to Finish HBO’s Succession and What It Teaches Us About How Not to Run a Family Enterprise

I tried to watch the award-winning HBO series on numerous occasions, stopping repeatedly, not because it wasn’t brilliant, but because it was brutal. The cynicism, humiliation, and constant power games felt too extreme. For anyone working closely with multi-generational family enterprises, this world of perpetual chaos and zero-sum power felt not only far removed from our reality, but was also a painful mirror reflecting everything that causes a family enterprise to fail.
